Legally protected by Condephaat in 1998, this house has the figure of Sebastiana de Mello Freire, a rich madam known by Dona Yayá, diagnosed with a psychiatric illness and since then confined in her own property, as reference to the collective memory. This paper objectifies the study of the heritage process of the building, through the analysis of the process of legal protection by the Defense Council of Historic, Archaeological, Artistic and Touristic Heritage (Coondephaat). It will discuss the aspects of the property valuation, the arguments for the legal protection, as remaining of the way of life in the Bexiga neighborhood and in the city of São Paulo in the mid-nineteenth century, the small ranches in urban area, and the memory of the way of thinking and treating madness in the first half of the 20th century.
