The high rates of morbidity and mortality caused by fungal infections are associated with the current limited antifungal arsenal and the high toxicity of compounds available on the pharmaceutical market. In addition, the identification of new drug targets is a challenge, as there are many biochemical / metabolic similarities between fungal and human cells. The search for alternatives for new antifungal therapies that are affordable, effective against pathogenic fungi and that cause minimal side effects in humans, hasled our laboratory to analyze the effects that some natural extracts have on Candida species. Thus, the work aims to analyze data on possible lipid changes in different species of the pathogenic fungus of the genus Candida, after treatment with essential oils from Melaleuca alternifolia, Syzygiumaromaticum and Mentha piperita. Cultures of Candida spp. cultivated at 37°C, in the presence or absence of essential oils, were used to define the MIC and IC 50 values, growth curve and morphological analysis of the treated cells and their respective controls. Crude lipid compounds were extracted through a combination of solvents with different polarities. The crude extract went through purification processes (dialysis and silica gel column) and was subsequently analyzed by HPTLC and densitometry using the Image-J analysis tool. The results obtained showed us that all the essential oils used presented an inhibitory growth potential in the genusCandida. There was a change in the composition of phospholipids when compared to control with treated cells. Phospholipids are related to virulence factors in fungi, the suppression of these components, possibly can lead to promising results in the treatment of candidiasis.
