Research studies that have been responsible for discussing Ubiratan D’Ambrosio present the different roles he played throughout his extensive professional career, namely as a researcher, mathematician, teacher, advisor, event organizer, and promoter of connections between people who came to form scientific societies in Brazil, among others... It can be seen in these studies that Ubiratan’s training took place, in particular, in what is called pure mathematics, and from there his first research interests came. However, this work sought evidence of the process of formation of the mathematics educator Ubiratan D’Ambrosio, who went to the United States to pursue a post-doctorate in pure mathematics and returned nine years later, internationally recognized as a mathematics educator. To write this story, we initially used letters that make up the Ubiratan D’Ambrosio Personal Collection (APUA), which is in the custody of GHEMAT-Brazil. Theoretical references that discuss personal archives, epistolary research and letter analysis, such as Foucault (1992), Gomes (1998), Bacellar (2008), Malatian (2009), Farge (2022) among others, supported the research. These references consider letters as writings of the subjectivity of the subjects and the approximation with the historical events that occur at the time of the exchange of correspondence between the researched and his network of relationships. The methodological movement carried out in this research initially occurred through the analysis of excerpts from 55 letters cataloged during the research that form the collection “Educador Matemático”. As a result, it was observed that Ubiratan approached the field of Mathematics Education based on the knowledge of “new cultures”, which allowed him to escape from his epistemological cages.
