Introduction: Work is closely related to health and well-being, being considered a source of satisfaction for the most diverse human needs. On the other hand, the unique context and work experiences specific to the nature of the activity can cause physical, social and psychological damage. Therefore, it is necessary to deepen the relationship of work with the functionality and quality of life of servers and carry out an early diagnosis of the organization, conditions and socio-professional relationships, for priority subsidiary and transformative changes, preventing illness through work. Objective: To investigate possible relations between the work context and the functionality and life quality of the Municipal Environment Secretariat (SEMAM) employees. Methods: For data collection, five instruments were used: an initial assessment questionnaire, World Heath Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0), Work Inventory and Illnes Risks (ITRA), Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (QNSO) and a shortened version of The World Health Organization of Life (WHOQOL-bref). Results: The sample consists of middle-aged individuals of both sexes. Despite having good functionality, 80% reported pain in the last days and 31.7% make continuous medications use, 56.1% do not have disabilities and 75.6% rated their life quality as regular. The average working time was 10 years and 58.5% reported taking more than 5 kg at work. There were no statistically significant differences in age and working time in relation to functionality, life quality and risk of illness at work. Besides that, there are no relevant differences between positions and functionality and quality of life. ITRA demonstrated critical evaluations in the items: work organization, work conditions, physical costs, emotional and cognitive, professional exhaustion and recognition lack. The servers who presented better evaluations in the work organization, in the socioprofessional relations and in the freedom expression had more positive perceptions in the life quality; and employees with mild disabilities, compared to those without disabilities, had worse assessments in work-related social and psychological damage. Conclusion: In the work context, an organization and socio-professional relations, as well as freedom expression impacted the life quality of the employee, in the same way than people with less functionality, had more social and psychological damage caused by work. The results indicated that, although the majority of the employees do not have disabilities or have mild disabilities, the majority complained of musculoskeletal pain, the perception of life quality was regular and the working assessment conditions was critical; reaffirming the importance of an early diagnosis of working conditions, thus favoring the design of strategies and actions to minimize the impacts on workers' health.
