This Master's research aimed at analysing how fear is constructed in IT (2017), by Stephen King, within the scope of terror and gothic literatures. We specifically intended to understand the construction of verisimilitude, and its play in relation to the narrated events, as well as the setting present in the narrative and the figuration of characters, very important elements for us to grasp the conception of reality and, from it, to analyze how fear is fostered. For theoretical purposes, we resorted to Botting (2005), Cavallaro (2002), Punter (2012) and Rossi (2008), about gothic literature. Regarding fear, we turned to Bauman (2008) and França (2022), as well as to King (2010). In terms of studies on the figuration of characters, monstrous creatures, spiders and clowns, Asma (2009), Cohen (1996), Oliveira Neto (2018), Radford (2016), Reis (2019) and Weinstock (2014) were consulted. Other important references for the theoretical scope of this research were: Christie (2017), Florence; Hafdahl (2020), Magistrale (2014) and Meyrer (2019) on Stephen King and his works, mainly regarding themes such as family conflicts, terror and childhood. As far as methodology is concerned, this was a bibliographic qualitative research, following the theoretical-critical and analytical-interpretative paradigms. With this study, we hoped to understand how fear occurs in Stephen King's narrative and, thus, contribute to the already existing critical fortune on this important author of modern terror.
