This study was designed to determine the heart rate (HR) responses during a soccer game and compare results to effort intensity markers. The study included nineteen professional soccer players (24.06 + 4.03 years old) from the São Paulo Futebol Clube team. Investigation was conducted during 2 so-called “friendly games,” i.e. HR was recorded every 5 seconds using a Polar Accurex. Average HR during the game was 166 + 9.0 BPM, (86% of the maximal heart rate MHR). The most frequent intensity zone was within 170-180 bpm with 28% of total game time; during 56.7% of the time athletes stay at intensity levels below the anaerobic threshold and the remaining time above it. In conclusion soccer is a high-intensity sport, basically intermittent in nature, and the game induces different physiological loads that must be observed when training is formulated.
