No método P.I.P. (ROY, 1967), a enfermeira realiza três ações, durante a
This experiment was intended to examine Roy's (1967) method P.I.P. effectiveness when applied to a group of mothers with hospitalized children in a teaching hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil. A total of 28 mothers were included in the sample, with 14 in the control group and 14 in the group experimental. During maternal-child interaction, and using the P.I.P. method, the nurse carries out three actions directed towards providing a higher adequation level to the mother's role. In the first action (P), the nurse pays attention to the mother's focus; in the second action (I), the nurse informs the mother about the child's situation; and in the third (P), the nurse allows the mother to participate in the hospitalized child's care. The latter was found to be an experimental variable. The dependent variable - higher adequation level of mother's role, was represented by scores. The results showed that the P.I.P. method applied for the experimental group presented a statistically significant increase within, the score levels. The mother's variables - age, educational level, and number offspring - as well as those of the hospitalized child - age and gender - failed to interfere in the results observed for the two groups. This study shows P.I.P. effectiveness in the nurse-mother interaction, while involving the mother in the role of her child's care.
