This monograph aims to analyze the construction of the urban memory of José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, a character of great participation and importance in the process of emancipation of Brazil from Portugal, popularly and historiographically known as Independence. José Bonifácio is evoked in the historiography as the Patriarch of the Independence and we note that, based on a mapping previously carried out by the project “Atlas urbano da Independência: cartografando monumentos e logradouros no Brasil”, he is the protagonist of this historical event most evoked in the capitals of the country, supplanting figures such as Dom Pedro I. Using the numbers of occurrences referring to José Bonifácio found in the aforementioned project we propose in this research an attempt to understand the creation of José Bonifácio's urban memory in Brazil, seeking to analyze beyond his political and historical role in the Independence, the toponymic, imagery and three-dimensional representations (monuments) present in the brazilian capitals with a focus on the capital of São Paulo and the city of Santos, which make them privileged bearers in an urban environment of a recurring part of the memory of Brazil's Independence.
