The evaluation of the behavior and temperament of dogs might be important for the psychological care of these animals and to promote a well-balanced relationship with their tutors. The project "Affective relationship between humans and their pets (P2B)" linked to the Center for Applied Research in Welfare and Human Behavior (CEPID Process Fapesp 2014 / 50282-5) was conducted with the purpose of validating the questionnaire PANAS (Positive and Negative Affect Scale) for the Portuguese language and Brazilian culture. This questionnaire evaluates the responsiveness of animals to pleasant and aversive experiences and provides negative (related to fear and anxiety) and positive (related to agitation and excitability) reactivity scores. The environment of data collection was virtual and voluntary on the part of the tutors. This project provides data not only on the behavior / temperament of the dogs, but also on the demographic characteristics of the tutors. The present research proposed to make a partial analysis of the results considering the questionnaires with complete answers. The main results showed associations between the activation scores and gender of the tutor, how the dog was acquired, having other dogs in the house, the dog's age, reproductive status, and the place where the dog sleeps. Women’s dogs showed greater negative emotional reactivity than men’s dogs, adopted dogs presented higher negative scores, dogs that live together with other dogs presented lower negative emotional reactivity, positive activation decreases as the dog age increases, neutered dogs had higher negative activation scores than intact dogs, and dogs that sleep in their tutors’ bed presented higher negative activation scores. The results indicate that the temperament of dogs may be associated with demographic characteristics of the owner and the dog, as well as the dynamics of the relationship between them.
