This study aimed to examine the relationship between Burnout and symptoms of Depression and Anxiety among 85 elementary school teachers in the cities of Fortaleza and Eusébio, Ceará, northeastern Brazil. Pre-test measures collected in the baseline assessment of the randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the Elos 2.0 School Program for the prevention of alcohol and other drugs were used. For this study, participants completed three assessment instruments: a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Burnout Syndrome Assessment Questionnaires, and the Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ). The results showed that approximately 9% of teachers exhibited symptoms of anxiety and depression. Burnout showed a significant association with symptoms of mental disorders, explaining 29% of the observed variance. Our study demonstrated the strong association between Burnout and symptoms of Depression and Anxiety in elementary school teachers. This underscores the importance of addressing Burnout as a significant factor contributing to mental health issues in this population. Efforts to mitigate Burnout symptoms could potentially alleviate the burden of mental illness among teachers.
