O uso do tabaco entre os estudantes dos cursos de graduação em fisioterapia em quatro instituições de ensino superior da cidade de São Paulo

Abstract

Introduction: Smoking is considered by the World Health Organization as the main preventable cause of death all over the world. The graduation students in the Health field courses must take part into actions concerning the smoking cease. Therefore, the prevalence of the smoking habit among these students must be known so that they could effectively participate into those programs. Objective: Assess the smoking habit among the graduation students in Physiotherapy. Outline: Cross-sectional exploratory study. Material: Five hundred eighty four students (584) students, both male and female at the average age of 21 ± 5, enrolled in Physiotherapy Courses from four education institutions situated in São Paulo city. Method: A questionnaire with questions concerning the demographic characteristics of the students, the quality of life (SF-12) and the nicotine dependence (Fagerstrom) was used. Results: Within the 584 students interviewed, 17.5% smoke regularly. Concerning the smokers, low and very low nicotine dependence was observed. The average age to start smoking was 15 years old and curiosity influenced 50% of the students to acquire this habit. There was no relevant difference between the answers of smokers and non-smokers, when the physical and mental domains of the SF-12 were considered. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that 17,5% of the Physiotherapy graduation students assessed were regular smokers, no matter the sex, term of the course or period of attendance to the classes.

Introdução: O tabagismo é considerado pela Organização Mundial da Saúde como a principal causa de morte prevenível em todo o mundo. Os alunos dos cursos de graduação em saúde devem participar de ações relacionadas com a cessação do tabagismo. Portanto, a prevalência do hábito tabagístico entre estes estudantes deve ser conhecida para que possam participar efetivamente nestes programas. Objetivo: Avaliar o hábito do tabagismo entre alunos dos cursos de graduação em Fisioterapia. Delineamento: Estudo de coorte transversal de caráter exploratório. Material: Foram investigados 584 alunos de ambos os gêneros com idade média de 21 ± 5 anos, matriculados nos Cursos de Graduação em Fisioterapia de quatro instituições de ensino localizadas no município de São Paulo. Método: Utilizou-se um questionário contendo perguntas relacionadas às características demográficas dos alunos, da qualidade de vida (SF-12) e dependência à nicotina (Fagerstrom). Resultados: Dos 584 alunos entrevistados, verificou-se que 17,5% fumam regularmente. Entre os fumantes, observou-se baixa ou muito baixa dependência à nicotina. A idade média de início do tabagismo foi de 15 anos e a curiosidade influenciou 50% dos alunos a adquirirem este hábito. Não houve diferença significante entre as respostas dos alunos fumantes e dos que não fumam, quando comparados os domínios físico e mental do SF-12. Conclusão: Este estudo demonstrou que 17,5% dos estudantes dos cursos de Fisioterapia investigados são fumantes regulares, independente do gênero, ano do curso ou o turno das aulas freqüentadas..
