The present research, taking part in the process of rescuing the life and work of the maranhense writer Maria Firmina dos Reis (1822-1917), seeks to expand the possibilities of analysis of the work Úrsula. The “shy education” asserted by the author herself in her prologue is constantly highlighted in biographical and critical studies of her work, although Maria Firmina was the first woman to get the position of middle school teacher in Maranhão and founded the first mixed school in that state in 1880. The critical look at the Úrsula narrative and the author’s prologue barely went beyond the anti-slavery analyzes and the simple affirmation of the author’s little ability in this first production. Only recently, around 2017, studies began to analyze other aspects of the book and possible influences of Maria Firmina’s writing. In this study, based on the assumption that there are still unexplored facets in that novel, we intend to analyze the pacts between author and reader signed in the prologue, seeking to establish the author’s level of awareness about the reality of the national public. Moving on to the narrative voice, the possibility of attributing a genre to such a figure is discussed ’ased on evidence of the construction of the novel. The narrative project of Maria Firmina dos Reis is also investigated based on the premise of the attempt addressed in the prologue. Finally, the research will endeavor to analyze the communication between the narrative and the influences, explicit and implicit, of works and styles of the same period, aiming to establish new interpretations about the plot and construction of the characters.
