Online (SCIELO), Science Direct, google scholar e Pubmed.
Health literacy is a very complex phenomenon that presents as a mechanism for the evolution or development of an individual in health education, so that the individual is subject to assume as a response to the demands of health and disease and the context in which it is located. The most vulnerable groups are the elderly and patients with chronic diseases or individuals with inability to interpret the material. The internet becomes the largest source of information consulted by patients both before diagnosis and after. This review aims to analyze the level of health literacy among patients and its unfolding in relation to the prescribed medication and the outcome of the disease Method: this is a bibliographic review study based on the current individual awareness related to national and international demographic data that has as relevant factor self-knowledge in health. The study selected 12 articles with searches on the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Science Direct and Pubmed website. Result: the results show a low level of health literacy, which corroborates poor treatment support. Literacy level is directly associated with higher rates of deaths and rehospitalization. Conclusion: health literacy is a primary factor, with an active role in decision making. Inadequate LFS influence on the treatment of chronic diseases, since it is associated with poor medication and care.
