Diferenciações entre os Fulas de Gabú

Abstract

This dissertation aims to contribute to the question of differentiation (Brah, 2006), based on the analysis of some elements that marks the hierarchization of the relations between the Fulas of Gabu. Starting from the conception that ethnicity is a colonial ideological creation, I intend to demonstrate how those who call themselves Fulas relate to each other, as well the differences that mark their several segments. The idea of ethnicity remained in the imagination of local societies, even after the colonial period, and during the war of independence of Guinea-Bissau the concept of ethnicity was instrumentalized with political purposes, leading the Fulas to be represented in a stereotyped way towards other peoples. In addition to the description of the ethnography carried out in the city of Pitche, in the region of Gabu, eastern Guinea-Bissau, I will present data from the anthropological literature about the Fulas from other regions of the African continent to help in understand some elements that permeate the social organization of the Fulas of Gabu. Thus, I will try to demonstrate how elements considered to form a “fulanity” such as the Islamic religion, language or the code of moral conduct of this group vary according to the historical period or the location where the research was carried out.

Esta dissertação busca contribuir com a questão da diferenciação (Brah, 2006), a partir da análise de alguns elementos que marcam a hierarquização das relações entre os Fulas de Gabú. Partindo da concepção de que a etnia é uma criação ideológica colonial, pretendo demonstrar como aqueles que se autodenominam Fulas se relacionam entre si, bem como as diferenças que marcam seus diversos segmentos. A ideia de etnicidade permaneceu no imaginário das sociedades locais mesmo após o fim do período colonial, e durante a guerra de independência da Guiné-Bissau o conceito de etnia foi instrumentalizado com fins políticos, levando os Fulas a serem representados de maneira estereotipada frente a outros povos. Somada à descrição da etnografia realizada na cidade de Pitche, região de Gabú, no leste da Guiné-Bissau, apresentarei dados da literatura antropológica sobre os Fulas de outras regiões do continente africano para ajudar na compreensão de alguns elementos que perpassam a organização social dos Fulas de Gabú. Assim, procurarei demonstrar como elementos tidos como formadores de uma “fulanidade” como a religião islâmica, idioma ou o código de conduta moral desse grupo variam de acordo com o período histórico ou a localidade onde as pesquisas foram realizadas.
