Hume e a teoria cética sobre o espaço

Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to present David Hume's theory of space, anchored in his skeptical theory, already present in the second chapter of his Treatise on Human Nature. Here, the coherence between these two aspects of Humean theory fulfills the central objective, in view of the accusation launched against skeptics regarding a “positive” theory originating in skeptical philosophy. In this sense, we will seek, in the philosophical literature of modernity, the influences that led Hume to reflect in his writings on space/extension - fundamentally the conceptual distinction between primary and secondary qualities - together with his method of philosophical investigation within which his skepticism proposal is presented. In addition: the understanding of the “fourth theory” about space is aimed not only at the defense of Humean originality, but, indeed, it attempts to highlight the conciliatory nucleus on which a skeptical theory about space is conceptually supported.

Objetiva-se, por meio desta dissertação, apresentar a teoria sobre o espaço, em David Hume, ancorada em sua teoria cética, presente já no segundo capítulo de seu Tratado da Natureza Humana. Aqui, a coerência entre esses dois aspectos da teoria humeana perfaz o objetivo central, tendo em vista a acusação lançada aos céticos a respeito de uma teoria “positiva” originária da filosofia cética. Neste sentido, buscaremos, na literatura filosófica da modernidade, as influências que levaram Hume a refletir em seus escritos sobre o espaço/extensão - fundamentalmente a distinção conceitual entre qualidades primárias e qualidades secundárias - juntamente com seu método de investigação filosófica no interior do qual sua proposta de ceticismo é apresentada. Em adição: a compreensão da “quarta-teoria” sobre o espaço visa não somente a defesa da originalidade humeana, mas, efetivamente, intenta pôr em relevo o núcleo conciliatório sobre o qual se sustenta conceitualmente uma teoria cética acerca do espaço.
