Objective: This work evaluates the results of the application of the Laboratório de Leitura (LabLei), an activity carried out at the Center for History and Philosophy of Health Sciences of the Federal University of São Paulo (CeHFi-Unifesp), in the routine of participants in the Projeto Borboleta, a volunteer initiative which benefits mothers, grandmothers and caregivers of children and young people with disabilities attended by the AACD Lar Escola São Francisco. The objectives were to verify the hypothesis of the contribution of experience in the way these women experience disability and to analyze the impact of debates on the resignification of opinions on empathy, otherness and self-identity related to disability, contributing to a movement of awareness and self-knowledge that, in turn, they could foster humanization. Methods: The research was supported by the application of the three stages of LabLei: Histórias de Leitura, Itinerário de Discussão and Histórias de Convivência. The qualitative-based research methodology was based on Participant Observation and the Immersion and Crystallization approach, to analyze the collected narratives, in dialogue with the theoretical framework. Results: Seven LabLei cycles were applied, in a total of 28 meetings of 1h30 each. 175 subjects were selected. Of these, empathy and otherness were analyzed from a philosophical perspective in an article published by Interface magazine. In a second article, being evaluated by the Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais, the self-identity and identity of the collaborators were worked on from a sociophilosophical perspective. Both articles summarize the research results. Conclusions: The intervention contributed to the objectives of the Projeto Borboleta insofar as it allowed for the expected movement of awareness and self-knowledge, facilitating a possible humanization process. It can be said that this work offers results that contribute to the reflection on correlated themes and add value to the Projeto Borboleta proposal, providing a feeling of welcome from a new perspective on disability. It is at this point that a link between this reality and humanization is observed, and the investigation of the effects of literature – the object of the LabLei – as a humanizing instrument is justified.
