In the past decades, anticancer drugs have presented high rates of consumption due to the increase in the rate of cancer worldwide. An example is a cytotoxic drug, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), one of the most used compounds in chemotherapeutic treatment. After being consumed by humans, it is metabolized and excreted via feces and urine and passes into the effluent treatment system. It is known that conventional treatment methods are limited in removing resistant drugs, such as 5-FU. Its constancy in the environment, even at low concentrations, can cause risks to the environment and human health since this compound has specific characteristics to cause DNA damage. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the Brazilian and European scenario, regarding the development of technologies to remove 5-FU from water bodies. For this, a systematic review of the literature over 15 years (2006 to 2021) using the ScienceDirect and PubMed databases. Following this, the inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, for further data extraction and evaluation of the studies and their techniques used to remove 5-FU. Thirty- eight papers were selected, and Brazil's contribution as a correspondence country was 2,63% compared to 63% from countries of the European Union. This revealed a delay in the development of technologies to remove micropollutants, such as 5-fluorouracil, compared with Europe. The techniques which used chemicals processes to remove 5-FU were most of the studies (24). The studies that used advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) were the more efficient in the percentage of removal and in treatment time, having an average efficiency of 98,1%
