REBIRTH IS NECESSARY: Jenn Nkiru e as estéticas negras no audiovisual contemporâneo.

Abstract

Este trabalho tem como finalidade estudar a diretora anglo-nigeriana Jenn Nkiru, e a sua contribuição no audiovisual e nos espaços museológicos. Focará na obra Rebirth is Necessary (2017), que foi exposta como vídeo-arte no MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, em 2019, no contexto da exposição Histórias Afro- Atlânticas. Nele, a artista investiga as múltiplas experiências negras na arte, moda, filosofia, literatura, música, dança e religiosidade ao redor do mundo. Jenn se debruça na recuperação da memória sociocultural negra, desenvolvendo uma narrativa mediada por imagens de arquivo e filmagens produzidas pela própria diretora. Compõem assim, temporalidades díspares, mas que se mantêm presentes na construção de subjetividades e representações negras dentro da história e do audiovisual. Portanto, este trabalho pretende destrinchar e compreender os elementos narrativos e estéticos construídos pela artista em Rebirth is Necessary (2017), investigar sua incorporação em museus e curadorias. Visa propor, consequentemente, outros olhares aos estudos audiovisuais sobre questões raciais dentro do campo da História da Arte, tendo como metodologia uma revisão bibliográfica e análise crítica dos elementos visuais apresentados.

This work aims to study the Anglo-Nigerian director Jenn Nkiru, and her contribution to the audiovisual and museum spaces. It will focus on the work Rebirth is Necessary (2017), which was exhibited as video art at MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, in 2019, in the context of the exhibition “Histórias Afro-Atlânticas”. In the video art, the artist investigates the multiple black experiences in art, fashion, philosophy, literature, music, dance and religiosity around the world. Jenn focuses on the recovery of black socio-cultural memory, developing a narrative mediated by archival images and footage produced by the director herself. Thus, the work compose disparate temporalities, but which remain present in the construction of black subjectivities and representations within history and audiovisual. Therefore, this study intends to unravel and understand the narrative and aesthetic elements constructed by the artist in Rebirth is Necessary (2017), investigate its incorporation in museums and curatorships. It aims, consequently, to propose another perspective to audiovisual studies on racial issues within the field of Art History, having as a methodology a bibliographic review and critical analysis of the visual elements presented.
