The goal of this study was to investigate the causes and consequences of the problematic binge watching behavior in consumers. A sample of 388 respondents was submitted to a study conducted in three parts: Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), Necessary Condition Analysis and Artificial Neural Networks. All steps were aimed to refine the research and identify precursors factors that could influence the practice. The Structural Equation Modeling showed that boredom is the strongest precursor, and this construct is the most important, according to Artificial Neural Networks, for understanding the motivations of binge watching. In the Analysis of Necessary Conditions, the Parasocial Relationships construct showed higher results, indicating that viewer’s engagement is associated with the ability to relate to the characters. With this, the present study was able to show that the consumption of media in this format, associated with the psychological predisposition of the viewers, can lead to the development of negative symptoms similar to addiction in various technologies, compromising the individual’s life both physically and psychologically. The factors analyzed (boredom, degree of parasocial relationships, social anxiety, and depression) were confirmed as precursors of the practice, influencing the compulsory effect of binge watching. In addition, the study provided the validation of two moderation hypotheses: the first on the relationship between escapism, depression and binge watching and the second on social anxiety, parasocial relationships and binge watching. Thus, the study fulfills the role of making individuals aware of the problems associated with this practice, given that the results of this research showed that the practice of binge watching is not presented only as a form of harmless entertainment, and may, depending on the motivations of the individual to present a problematic form of this behavior.
