Realidade e Ficção na fotografia de Graciela Iturbide

Abstract

A artista mexicana Graciela Iturbide possui vasta obra, sendo uma das fotógrafas mais relevantes da atualidade. Sua obra se entrelaça com os discursos que debatem o ato fotográfico como documentação da realidade. Seus inúmeros retratos dos modestos pueblos de seu país levam comumente a classificá-la como uma antropóloga das imagens. Por outro lado, paripasso com o documental sua produção fotográfica também se vincula a narrativas de uma americanidade fantástica, com matizes surreais. Tanto o documental quanto o ficcional apontam, em Iturbide, para vieses de expressão de irresolvível caracterização. Este trabalho entende, pois, partir de certas insuficiências de toda caracterização canônica da obra de Iturbide de maneira a abordá-la com um jogo indecidível entre realidade e ficção. Iturbide seria uma fotógrafa que navega nas malhas das inconsistências, do acaso, do indefinido.

The Mexicain artist Graciela Iturbide has a vast body of work, being one of the most relevant contemporary photographers. Her work is intertwined with the discourses that debate the photographic act as a reliable documentation of reality by making numerous portraits of the pueblos of her country, which contributed to classify her as an anthropologist. On the other hand, it also chains the narrative of a fantastic Latin America built in the late 1980s in Mexico, as well as approaches to Surrealism. Both interpretations point, at first, to two opposite and irreconcilable poles. While they are insufficient to analyze Iturbide, these definitions are questioned and it is proposed to approach her photographs as a play between reality and fiction. Iturbide would be a photographer who navigates the meshes of inconsistencies, of chance, of the indefinite.
