Percepção de risco e representações sociais a respeito de resíduos e rejeitos radioativos: um estudo de caso com estudantes do Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares

Resumo
O gerenciamento adequado de resíduos e rejeitos radioativos de laboratórios de pesquisa e
ensino dependem também da responsabilidade daqueles que os geram, sendo esse um
planejamento importante na elaboração de projetos. Não são apenas os resultados acurados
que devem ser objetivados, mas também métodos que gerem menores volumes desses
materiais e seus descartes adequados. Nesse sentido, o presente estudo teve por objetivo
investigar a percepção de risco e representações sociais a respeito de resíduos e rejeitos
radioativos entre estudantes do Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares. Foi aplicado
questionário estruturado a 104 estudantes do instituto, no período de agosto de 2017 a agosto
de 2018. A percepção de risco dos estudantes que responderam ao questionário não
demonstrou ser influenciada pelo conhecimento adquirido durante as disciplinas oferecidas
no programa de pós-graduação, fato que pode afetar a tomada de decisões relativas ao
gerenciamento de rejeitos radioativos. As discussões acerca da geração e minimização desses
materiais devem ser aprimoradas, e a articulação com os conceitos da química verde podem
ser benéficos para isso. No que tange às representações sociais, verificou-se que existe
relação entre sua estrutura e o risco oferecido pelos rejeitos radioativos. Como sugestão do
presente estudo está a elaboração de um manual de boas práticas de laboratório, que reforce
a necessidade de repensar métodos que gerem menos resíduos e rejeitos, sejam eles
radioativos ou não, além de oferecer aos estudantes do instituto uma disciplina obrigatória
sobre gerenciamento de resíduos e rejeitos de laboratório.
The proper management of radioactive waste from research and teaching laboratories also depends on the responsibility of those who generate them, which is an important planning in the design of projects. It is not only the accurate results that should be aimed, but also methods that generate lower volumes of these materials and their appropriate discards. In this sense, the present study aimed to investigate the perception of risk and social representations regarding radioactive waste among students of the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute. A structured questionnaire was applied to 104 students from August 2017 to August 2018. The risk perception of the students who answered the questionnaire was not influenced by the knowledge acquired during the courses offered in the postgraduate program, fact which can affect decision making regarding the management of radioactive waste. Discussions about the generation and minimization of these materials should be improved, and articulation with the concepts of green chemistry may be beneficial to this. Regarding social representations, it was verified that there is a relationship between its structure and the risk offered by radioactive waste. As a suggestion of the present study is the development of a manual of good laboratory practices, which reinforces the need to rethink methods that generate less waste, whether radioactive or not, and to offer to the students of the institute a compulsory discipline on waste and laboratory waste.
