"Um Catálogo De Erros Agora Em Voga": Ortodoxia Presbiteriana, Intertextualidade E Confessionalização Na Obra Gangraena (1646) De Thomas Edwards

Abstract

This dissertation aims to place Thomas Edward’s Gangraena, or, A catalogue and discovery of many of the errours, heresies, blasphemies and pernicious practices of the sectaries of this time (1646) within the disputes between the First English Civil War’s orthodoxies and heterodoxies. It intends to analyze the book in three central aspects: first, by reading Gangraena both looking into the heresiological genre and the inherent intertextual characteristics in Edwards’ writings; Then by an appreciation of the publication in view of the discussions related to English Presbyterianism; And finally by examining it within the frames of a broader debate about the period in which the categories of confessionalization and social discipline are crucial. By starting from an observation about the political and religious issues of that time, the interests to define a government and a discipline of the church based on Presbyterian orthodoxy, and the rhetorical, intertextual and polemical mechanisms of the period, one hopes to comprehend Gangraena recognizing the orthodox projects of its author and the criticisms of the many heretical behaviors which were, to Edwards, a disease to be fought in England of the period.

Esta dissertação procura localizar a obra Gangraena, or, A catalogue and discovery of many of the errours, heresies, blasphemies and pernicious practices of the sectaries of this time, produzida por Thomas Edwards em 1646, em meio às disputas entre ortodoxias e heterodoxias durante a Primeira Guerra Civil Inglesa. Intenciona-se analisar a publicação de acordo com três eixos centrais: primeiramente, trabalhando Gangraena a partir do gênero heresiológico e dos aspectos intertextuais inerentes aos escritos de Edwards; em seguida, por uma apreciação da obra considerando às discussões relativas ao presbiterianismo inglês; e, por fim, analisando-a tendo em vista debates mais amplos para o período concernentes às categorias de confessionalização e disciplinamento social. Partindo das reflexões relativas às problemáticas políticoreligiosas da época, aos interesses pela definição de um governo e uma disciplina da igreja fundamentados na ortodoxia presbiteriana e aos mecanismos retóricos, intertextuais e polêmicos de então, espera-se compreender a publicação percebendo os projetos ortodoxos de seu autor e as críticas aos muitos comportamentos tidos como heréticos que eram, para Edwards, uma enfermidade a ser combatida na Inglaterra do período.
