The present paper has as its main goal the study of the tissue repair of cutaneous wound in rats by the treatment with papain solution at 2%. To perform the research it were used 40 Wistar adult male rats. In each rat it was made a 2.0cm wound on its dorsal region. The animals were divided in two groups of 20 rats each, called Control Group and Papain Group. Each one of these groups were divided again in 4 groups with 5 animals each, according to the cicatrization phase to be analised, that meant the third, seventh fourteenth and twenty-first post operative days. At the respective dates the animals were killed and had their wounds removed and sent to histological exam. It was performed a comparative study between the two wound groups through morphological and histometrical analysis in order to count leucocyts, fiberblasts and colagen fibers. the resultant data from histometry were submitted to statistical analysis by Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The results showed that in the papain group, there was a faster epitelial growth than the Control Group. In the same way, the number of leucocyts was always smaller in the papain group, the fiberblasts number was bigger in the papain group and the number of colagenous fibers in the papain group, as well always bigger in relation to the control group. It can be conclued that the tissue repair at the wounds treated with papain had a faster evolution than the control group.
