- ItemSomente MetadadadosA comparative study of the effects of electroacupuncture and moxibustion in the gastrointestinal motility of the rat(Kluwer Academic/plenum Publ, 2004-04-01) Tabosa, A.; Yamamura, Y.; Forno, E. R.; Mello, LEAM; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)We compared the outcomes of the stimulation of specific sets of acupoints with either acupuncture or moxibustion over peristalsis. Twenty-five plastic beads were orally administered in the stomach of the rats and 90 min later animals were sacrificed, the stomach and small intestine were opened, and the number of beads remaining in each segment was counted. Forty rats were immobilized for 20 min and stimulated at either abdominal or hindlimbs acupoints, with either electroacupuncture or moxibustion. Under this restraint (stress) condition electroacupuncture at hindlimb points or moxibustion at abdominal points significantly enhanced gastric emptying (P < 0.02) as well as intestinal motility compared with animals subjected only to immobilization and not stimulated with electroacupuncture or moxibustion. We conclude that the effects of different acupoints and modes of stimulation (electrical vs. moxibustion) over gastrointestinal motility in rats subjected to restraint-induced stress is not uniform and discuss the different neural pathways underlying these differences.
- ItemSomente MetadadadosComparison of Acupuncture to Injection for Myofascial Trigger Point Pain(Wiley-Blackwell, 2011-03-01) Gazi, Miriam C. B. [UNIFESP]; Issy, Adriana M. [UNIFESP]; Avila, Iliada P. [UNIFESP]; Sakata, Rioko K. [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Objectives: Many treatments have been proposed for myofascial pain syndrome. the objective of this study was to compare the analgesic effect of acupuncture to trigger point injection combined with cyclobenzaprine chlorhydrate and sodium dipyrone. Methods: A randomized study was performed in 30 patients divided into 2 groups: G1 received trigger point injection with 0.25% bupivacaine twice weekly, and both cyclobenzaprine chlorhydrate 10 mg/day and sodium dipyrone 500 mg every 8 hours; G2 received classical and trigger point acupuncture twice weekly. All patients were instructed in physical exercise. the following parameters were evaluated: pain intensity rated on a numerical scale, number of trigger points, and quality of life before and 4 weeks after treatment. Results: the pain scores and the number of trigger points reduced significantly in both groups, with no significant difference between groups. Significant improvement in the quality of life scores was observed for some of the functional domains in the 2 groups, whereas there was no improvement of the general health status domain in either group or of the emotional domain in G1.Conclusion: Acupuncture, when compared with trigger point injection, combined with cyclobenzaprine chlorhydrate and sodium dipyrone provided similar pain relief and improvement in quality of life measures at 4 weeks.

[UNIFESP]; Grinbaum, R. S.; Elmor de Araujo, M. R.; Abensur, H.; Araujo, M. R. T.; Romao, J. E.; Sampaio, J. L. M.; Noronha, I. L.; Universidade de São Paulo (USP); Hosp Beneficencia Portuguesa São Paulo; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Fleury DiagnostP>Mycobacterium haemophilum is a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium that can cause disease in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. the most common clinical presentations of infection are the appearance of suppurative and ulcerated skin nodules. for the diagnosis, samples collected from suspected cases must be processed under the appropriate conditions, because M. haemophilum requires lower incubation temperatures and iron supplementation in order to grow in culture. in this case report, we describe the occurrence of skin lesions in a kidney transplant recipient, caused by M. haemophilum, associated with acupuncture treatment. the diagnosis was established by direct smear and culture of material aspirated from cutaneous lesions. Species identification was achieved by characterization of the growth requirements and by partial sequencing of the hsp65 gene. the patient was successfully treated with clarithromycin and ciprofloxacin for 12 months. Considering that the number of patients receiving acupuncture treatment is widely increasing, the implications of this potential complication should be recognized, particularly in immunosuppressed patients.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Efeito da acupuntura sobre as emissões otoacústicas de pacientes com zumbido(ABORL-CCF Associação Brasileira de Otorrinolaringologia e Cirurgia Cérvico-Facial, 2007-10-01) Azevedo, Renata Frasson De [UNIFESP]; Chiari, Brasilia Maria [UNIFESP]; Okada, Daniel Mochida [UNIFESP]; Onishi, Ektor Tsuneo [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)The treatment of tinnitus is still a challenge. Acupuncture is recommended for the relief of tinnitus in traditional Chinese Medicine, although scientific evidence is lacking. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of acupuncture on the cochlear function in patients with tinnitus by analyzing otoacoustic emissions. METHODS: Thirty eight patients with tinnitus were included in the prospective clinical study. Measures of transitory otoacoustic emissions and suppression of otoacoustic emissions were obtained from all subjects before and after acupuncture. Patients were assigned to one of two groups: intervention group 1 (n=19), in which needle acupuncture was applied at the temporoparietal point corresponding to the vestibulocochlear area, and intervention group 2 (n=19), in which the needle was applied 3cm cranially to this area (which is not a recognized acupuncture point). RESULTS:There was a significant difference between the amplitude of otoacoustic emissions assessed before and after acupuncture in intervention group 1. No difference was observed in intervention group 2. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture had a significant effect on otoacoustic emissions in patients with tinnitus.

This study with women from the largest favela in Ceará, Northeast Brazil, verified the effects of an IBM in women with chronic headache at social risk. Method: Preliminary, exploratory, quasi-experimental, mixed-approach (quantitative and qualitative) efficacy study evaluating the impact of an IBM on women users of SUS in relation to the disability in daily life activities (Midas) due to chronic headache (Primary outcome), as well as secondary variables such as level of mindfulness, perceived injustice and self-pity. One intervention with acupuncture was the active control group. Results: The participants' profile was: (44.5%) married; (51.3%) with up to 2 children; (63.9%) fundamental level; (53.8%) with income of 1 to 2 minimum wages and (72.21%) with chronic headache, being (63.3%) migraine and (8.8%) tension headache. Headache is associated with low schooling, low family income (p <0.05) and negative emotional events in life. In the self-reports, four social determinants of health that caused psychological distress were categorized: the social role of women in the community; Recurrent search for health services; Drug abuse and dysfunctional coping strategies. Psychological distress was at the basis of recurrent headache crises In the comparison within the IBM groups and acupuncture, IBM promoted a decrease in the level of headache inability indicated by self-reported but not by Midas; Increased self-pity (p <0.05); Increased level of mindfulness (p <0.05), whereas acupuncture promoted a decrease only in Midas (p <0.05). There was a decrease in perceived injustice in both groups, but not statistically significant (p> 0.05). In the comparison between groups, IBM presented higher levels of self-pity and mindfulness than in the acupuncture group, with a statistically significant difference (p <0.05). There were statistically significant correlations between Midas and perceived injustice (p <0.001) and Midas and mindfulness (p <0.05). In the regression model, only perceived injustice influenced Midas (p <0.001), corroborating the self-reports that highlighted this negative feeling in the genesis of headache. Final considerations and conclusions: This is the first international study to evaluate the effects of an IBM on a population of women with chronic and socially vulnerable headache compared to acupuncture. The two interventions were effective in reducing the incapacity of headache, and acting through different mechanisms. The results suggest that IBM positively influenced pain through mental and emotional processes (attention control, body awareness and emotional regulation), which did not occur in relation to the acupuncture group. The effects of IBM and acupuncture on chronic headache of the participants demonstrated preliminary potential efficacy of mind-body practices in socioeconomically vulnerable populations.

Methods: Women who had pain in the shoulder girdle and upper limb region after three months of surgery , aged 18 years and pain level ? 3 in Visual Analog Scale were included. The patients were randomly divided into two treatment groups received weekly for 10 weeks. Kinesiotherapy group (G1): kinesiotherapy treated with standard pre-defined, lasting 30 minutes. Acupuncture Group + kinesiotherapy (G2): treated with the same protocol kinesiotherapy group followed by another 30 minutes of acupuncture used in pre-defined points. Both groups underwent a physical examination and completed questionnaires of upper limb function and depressive symptoms. Results: 48 patients completed the treatment, and 24 in each group. Regarding pain, the two groups had statistically significant improvement with p < 0,01 at all time points assessed. In the analysis of depression improved significantly only in G1 compared the 1st versus 10th session. The upper limb function had improved only when comparing G1 1st versus 10th session, and G2 showed improvement in all three evaluation times. The range of motion showed improvement in all evaluated movements, movements flexion, extension and internal rotation was improved in G1 and G2 in the comparison of the 1 st session versus 5 th and 1st versus 10th session. In adduction, there was significant improvement only in G2 compared the 1st versus 10th session. Already abduction was no difference in G1 compared to the 1st versus 10th session and G2 in the 1 st session versus 5 th and 1st versus 10th session. Regarding external rotation was improved only in G1 at the 1 st session versus 5 th and 1st versus 10th session. Conclusion: The kinesiotherapy with or without acupuncture was effective for pain relief and function of the upper limb. Depressive symptoms showed significant improvement in the group that did only kinesiotherapy.
- ItemSomente MetadadadosThe effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on physical performance by sedentary subjects submitted to ergospirometric test on the treadmill(Edizioni Minerva Medica, 2005-03-01) Gentil, D.; Assumpcao, A.; Yamamura, Ysao [UNIFESP]; Barros Neto, Turibio Leite de [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Univ GuarulhosAim. Acupuncture and moxibustion are 2 therapeutic methods used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion in physical performance by an ergospirometry test.Methods. Thirty-one subjects, sedentary, were randomized into 3 groups: Group I (Acupuncture); Group II (Acupuneture-Sham) and Group III (Control). They were submitted to anamnesis and an ergospirometry test. The subjects from Groups I and II were submitted to 10 acupuncture and moxibustion sessions, twice a week, for 5 weeks. The differences between the groups were that in Group I the acupuncture and moxibustion sessions were performed in acupoints and Group II in non acupoints. After this, the ergospirometry test was performed again.Results. The acupuncture and moxibustion sessions did not increase maximum oxygen uptake (VO(2)max) significantly. Other variables presented a significant increasing: oxygen uptake in anaerobic threshold (VO2La); velocity in anaerobic threshold (Vel LA); caloric consumption (Gast Cal). The heart rate decreased when compared to velocity pre and post-treatment. The results show peripheral, afferent stimulation (acupuncture and moxibustion) could alter the functions of structures or internal organs. The decrease in heart rate and the significant improvement in oxygen uptake in anaerobic threshold are similar to adaptations to physical training. Probably, the autonomic nervous system (mainly sympathetic system) is engaged in the acupuncture and moxibustion mechanism of action.Conclusion. Acupuncture and moxibustion decreased the heart rate during the ergospirometry test, the oxygen uptake in anaerobic threshold (VO2La); velocity in anaerobic threshold (Vel LA) and caloric consumption (Gast Cal) had significantly increased.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Effects of acupuncture and moxa treatment in patients with semen abnormalities(Science China Press, 2003-12-01) Gurfinkel, Edson [UNIFESP]; Cedenho, Agnaldo Pereira [UNIFESP]; Yamamura, Ysao [UNIFESP]; Srougi, Miguel [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Aim: To evaluate the effect of Chinese Traditional Medicine, acupuncture and moxa treatment, on the semen quality in patients with semen abnormalities. Methods: In a prospective, controlled and blind study, nineteen patients, aged 24 years similar to 42 years and married for 3 years similar to 11 years without children with semen abnormalities in concentration, morphology and/or progressive motility without apparent cause, were randomized into two groups and submitted to acupuncture and moxa treatment at the therapeutic (Study Group) and the indifferent points (Control Group), respectively, for 10 weeks. Semen analyses were performed before and after the treatment course. Results: The patients of the Study Group presented a significant increase in the percentage of normal-form sperm compared to the Control Group (calculated U = 16.0, critical U = 17.0). Conclusion: The Chinese Traditional Medicine acupuncture and moxa techniques significantly increase the percentage of normal-form sperm in infertile patients with oligoastenoteratozoospermia without apparent cause. - ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Effects of acupuncture on behavioral, cardiovascular and hormonal responses in restraint-stressed Wistar rats(Associação Brasileira de Divulgação Científica, 1997-12-01) Guimarães, C.m.; Pinge, M.c.m.; Yamamura, Ysao [UNIFESP]; Mello, Luiz Eugenio Araujo de Moraes [UNIFESP]; A01; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Stress is a well-known entity and may be defined as a threat to the homeostasis of a being. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of acupuncture on the physiological responses induced by restraint stress. Acupuncture is an ancient therapeutic technique which is used in the treatment and prevention of diseases. Its proposed mechanisms of action are based on the principle of homeostasis. Adult male Wistar EPM-1 rats were divided into four groups: group I (N = 12), unrestrained rats with cannulas previously implanted into their femoral arteries for blood pressure and heart rate measurements; group II (N = 12), rats that were also cannulated and were submitted to 60-min immobilization; group III (N = 12), same as group II but with acupuncture needles implanted at points SP6, S36, REN17, P6 and DU20 during the immobilization period; group IV (N = 14), same as group III but with needles implanted at points not related to acupuncture (non-acupoints). During the 60-min immobilization period animals were assessed for stress-related behaviors, heart rate, blood pressure and plasma corticosterone, noradrenaline and adrenaline levels. Group III animals showed a significant reduction (60% on average, P<0.02) in restraint-induced behaviors when compared to groups II and IV. Data from cardiovascular and hormonal assessments indicated no differences between group III and group II and IV animals, but tended to be lower (50% reduction on average) in group I animals. We hypothesize that acupuncture at points SP6, S36, REN17, P6 and DU20 has an anxiolytic effect on restraint-induced stress that is not due to a sedative action
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Estudo prospectivo randomizado em mulheres com bexiga hiperativa tratadas com neuromodulação transcutânea sacral, acupuntura ou solifenacim(Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), 2016-11-25) Perez, Maria Graciela Varela [UNIFESP]; Sartori, Marair Gracio Ferreira [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of transcutaneous neuromodulation sacral, acupuncture or solifenacin in women with overactive bladder symptoms Casuistry and Methods: In a randomized, prospective and longitudinal trial were compared three groups: group A (transcutaneous neuromodulation sacral), group B (acupuncture) and group C (medication). They were assessed the quality of life responding the questionnaires King?s, Iqol, Iciq, V8, Fsfi and Qsf, and urinary symptoms through the voiding diary for seven days and pad test. The patients of group A received, twice a week, during twelve consecutive weeks, transcutaneous neuromodulation sacral using Tens current (transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation) through transcutaneous electrode stickers placed on both sides of the sacral vertebrae in level S2 and S4. The parameters of the current were: frequency of 10 Hz, pulse length of 200 microseconds and current intensity according to the tolerance of each patient. The patients of group B received, once a week, during twelve consecutive weeks, acupuncture, and they were used sterile and single-use needles during 20 minutes. The patients of group C received solifenacin (5mg) medication daily, provided by the medical service, with monthly control for twelve consecutive weeks. The three groups were reevaluated after twelve weeks of treatment. Results: They were included 23 patients in group A, 20 patients in group B and 8 patients in group C. After the treatment, the group A showed a significant reduction of urgency, urge-incontinence, nocturia and number of pads required; the group B reduced significantly urgency, urge-incontinence, nocturia and loss of urine (in gramme) in the pad test and the group C reduced significantly nocturia. There was no significant statistical difference between the three groups in the evaluation of these variables after treatment. There were significant improvements in the quality of life in the three groups, and there was only an intergroup difference between the groups C and B in the domain ?measurement of gravity? of the King?s questionnaire , with best results in the first group. Conclusion: Based on our results we can conclude that transcutaneous neuromodulation sacral, acupuncture and solifenacin (5mg) were effective in alleviating the symptoms of overactive bladder improving the polyuria, urgency, urge-incontinence, nocturia, urinary incontinence and quality of life after twelve weeks of treatment; where medication had more efficacy than acupuncture in the analysis of the item ?measurement of gravity? of the King?s questionnaire of quality of life.
- ItemSomente MetadadadosTreatment of moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome with acupuncture: A randomised, placebo-controlled pilot trial(Elsevier B.V., 2007-01-01) Freire, Anaflavia de Oliveira [UNIFESP]; Sugai, Gisele C. M.; Chrispin, Fernanda Silveira; Togeiro, Sonia Maria; Yamamura, Ysao; Mello, Luiz Eugenio; Tufik, Sergio [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Background and purpose: To investigate the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), assessed by polysomnography (PSG) and questionnaires of functional quality of life (SF-36) and excessive daytime sleepiness (Epworth).Patients and methods: We performed a randomised, placebo-controlled, single-blinded study, with blinded evaluation on 36 patients presenting an apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) of 15-30/h, assessed by PSG. the study took place at the Public Hospital of the Universidade Federal de S (a) over tildeo Paulo, Brazil, in the Division of Sleep Disorders of the Department of Psychobiology, between January, 2002 and August, 2004. Patients were randomly assigned to three groups: the acupuncture group (n = 12); the sham group, submitted to needle insertion in non-acupoints (n = 12); and the control group, receiving no treatment (n = 12). Patients received acupuncture or sham acupuncture once a week for 10 weeks. Results: Twenty-six patients completed the study. the AHI (P = 0.005), the apnea index (AI) (P = 0.008) and the number of respiratory events (P = 0.005) decreased significantly in the acupuncture group but not in the sham group. On the other hand, the control group displayed significant deterioration in some of the polysomnographic parameters, with a significant increase in the n umber of respiratory events (P = 0.025). Acupuncture treatment significantly improved (before vs. after treatment) several dimensions of the SF-36 and Epworth questionnaires. There was no significant association between changes in the body mass index (BMI) and AHI.Conclusions: Acupuncture is more effective than sharn acupuncture in ameliorating the respiratory events of patients presenting with moderate OSAS.
