- ItemSomente MetadadadosAge-related effects on genital reflexes induced by paradoxical sleep deprivation and cocaine in rats(Elsevier B.V., 2004-02-01) Andersen, Monica Levy [UNIFESP]; Bignotto, Magda [UNIFESP]; Papale, Ligia Assumpção [UNIFESP]; Tufik, Sergio [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Although sexual function often decreases with age, a recent study demonstrated that paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) was effective in inducing penile erection (PE) in 60% of 22-month-old PSD rats after acute cocaine injection, whereas this behavior was absent in non-PSD control rats. the present study sought to compare alterations in genital reflexes (PE and ejaculation-EJ) induced by PSD followed by acute cocaine or saline at different points in the life span of male rats. Rats of different ages (3, 6, 10, 12, 18, 22 and 28 months), were given a single injection of either saline or cocaine (7 mg/kg, i.p.) after a 4-day period of PSD, and then evaluated for genital reflexes. Results indicated that genital reflexes in PSD rats given saline become less frequent with age and disappear after the age of 18 months. However, cocaine potentiated and prolonged these behaviors until the age of 22 months. Although a number of factors are involved in such a complex phenomenon as PE, we suggest that the previously documented dopamine receptor supersensitivity induced by PSD may be an important contributor to the potentiation by cocaine of genital reflexes after sleep deprivation.

METHODS: a prospective, descriptive study, including 43 sexually active women with genital dystopy, undergoing surgery for pelvic organ prolapse, conducted between October 2004 and September 2006. The women completed the same multiple-choice questionnaire regarding sexual function, and analogic scales to quantify the degree of desire, arousal and satisfaction, and were clinically assessed using the pelvic organ prolapse quantification (POP-Q) staging system, before the surgery and three and six months after it. Statistical analysis was performed through the Bowker test for symmetry, Wilcoxon test, Student t test, chi2 and analysis of variance (ANOVA) as appropriate, with statistical significance set at 5% (p<0.05). RESULTS: all 43 women completed the follow-up at three and six months after the surgery, but two of them lost their partners after the surgery. Quality of sexual life improved significantly (p=0.03). Symptoms such as dyspareunia (25.6% before versus 17.1% after surgery), discomfort (27.9 versus 0%), embarrassment (20.9% versus 0%) and fear (2.3% versus 0%) significantly improved (p<0.001). Analogical scales scores regarding desire (5 versus 7, p=0.001), arousal (6 versus 8, p<0.001) and satisfaction with sexual life (5 versus 7, p<0.001) also improved. There was a statistically significant improvement (p<0.001) of the POP-Q stages after the surgery. However, there was no statistically significant correlation between changes in vaginal dimensions and changes in sexual function. CONCLUSIONS: after pelvic reconstructive surgery, there was a significant improvement in the quality of sexual life and of the POP-Q stages. However, there was no correlation between them.
- ItemSomente MetadadadosCan Ayahuasca and sleep loss change sexual performance in male rats?(Elsevier B.V., 2014-10-01) Alvarenga, Tathiana A. [UNIFESP]; Polesel, D. N. [UNIFESP]; Matos, G. [UNIFESP]; Garcia, V. A.; Costa, J. L.; Tufik, Sergio [UNIFESP]; Andersen, M. L. [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Pontificia Univ Catolica Rio Grande Sul PUCRS; Criminalist Inst São PauloThe ingestion of the beverage Ayahuasca usually occurs in religious ceremonies that are performed during the night leading to sleep deprivation. the purpose of the present study was to characterize the acute effects of Ayahuasca upon the sexual response of sleep deprived male rats. One group of sexually experienced male Wistar rats were submitted to a paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) protocol for 96 h, while another group spent the same amount of time in the home cage (CTRL). After this period, either saline or Ayahuasca drink (250, 500 and 1000 mu g mL(-1)) was administered by gavage and sexual behavior and hormonal concentrations were measured. Ayahuasca alone significantly decreased sexual performance at all doses. However, in sleep deprived rats, the lower dose increased sexual performance while the intermediate dose produced a detrimental effect on sexual response compared to the CTRL rats at the same dose. Regarding the hormonal analyses, a lower testosterone concentration was observed in sleepdeprived saline rats in relation to the CTRL group. Progesterone was significantly lower only in PSD rats at the dose 500 mu g mL(-1) compared with CTRL-500 mu g mL(-1) group. Corticosterone was unchanged among the groups evaluated. Our results suggest that Ayahuasca intake markedly impaired sexual performance alone, but, when combined with sleep deprivation, had significant, but heterogeneous, effects on male sexual response. IDUA is responsible for the breakdown of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), specifically dermatan sulphate and heparan sulphate and, when absent, causes the storage of these GAGs in both intracellular and extracellular compartments of several tissues. Patients with MPS I tend to have a short life expectancy when untreated. However, due to recent therapeutic advancements, many are reaching adult life and may chose to bear children. Therefore, it is relevant that the effects of MPS I on the female reproductive system and function be investigated. Aims: To characterise the female reproductive system and function in a murine model of MPS I. Methods: 3-month-old knockout and wild-type female mice underwent sexual behaviour and open field assays and were later euthanised. 6-month-old mice were also euthanised, but not tested behaviourally. Their reproductive organs and blood were collected. The uteri and ovaries were stained with haematoxylin and eosin and colloidal iron. The sulphated GAGs present in both organs were quantified through a colorimetric assay. Plasmatic steroidal hormones concentrations were determined through ELISA. Results: The knockout females had an equivalent performance to the control females in the sexual behaviour assay. They also presented lower mobility in the open field test when compared to controls. Fibrosis and GAG storage were seen in uterine and ovarian tissue of older knockout mice but were absent in their younger or control counterparts. GAG levels were higher only in the ovary of 3-month-old knockouts. Conclusion: Despite their decreased mobility, MPS I female mice express normal sexual behaviour. While their reproductive organs show severe morphological compromise, especially in older individuals, their sexual hormone production does not seem to be affected.
- ItemSomente MetadadadosCocaine-induced genital reflexes during paradoxical sleep deprivation and recovery(Elsevier B.V., 2003-02-01) Andersen, Monica Levy [UNIFESP]; Bignotto, Magda [UNIFESP]; Tufik, Sergio [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) for 96 h together with cocaine administration elicits genital reflexes (penile erection [PE] and ejaculation [EJ]) in rats. Our objective was to examine genital reflexes after periods of 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, and 144 h of PSD and during a 4-day recovery period in acute cocaine-administered rats. After 24 h of PSD followed by cocaine administration, animals started to display PE and EJ, peaking in the 96th It of PSD, whereas PE and EJ were absent in control animals. the effects of more than 96 h of PSD decrease genital reflexes as observed after 120 and 144 h. Genital reflexes were present in the recovery periods but diminished gradually during the period evaluated. Even short periods of PSD probably cause supersensitivity of dopamine (DA) receptors and exacerbate the effects of cocaine on dopaminergic pathways to induce frequent PE and EJ. [UNIFESP]; Tufik, Sergio [UNIFESP]; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4951931552005515; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8446616385937851; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1375290481822767; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)As paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) modifies cocaine-induced genital reflexes (penile erection [PE] and ejaculation [EJ]) and since cocaine is a scrotonin (5-HT) reuptake inhibitor, we hypothesized that 5-HT also plays a role in these genital reflexes in PSD male rats. After a 4-day period of PSD each group was administered with serotonergic, drugs prior to cocaine and placed in observation cages. the selective 5-HT1 agonist (8-OH-DPAT) completely abolished PE events whereas the antagonist (pindolol) did not produce significant effects in the number of animals displaying PE. It was found that both drugs reduce the frequency of PE. There were no significant effects on the number of animals that ejaculated or in its frequency after pindolol although both parameters were reduced by the agonist at the highest doses (2 and 4 mg/kg, SC). Pretreatment with the 5-HT2 agonist 1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2-aminopropane (DOI) (0.12; 0.5 and 1 mg/kg, SC) significantly reduced the number of rats displaying PE and all doses reduced both PE and EJ frequencies. the number of animals displaying PE after 5-HT2 antagonist (ketanserin) pretreatment at 1 and 2.5 mg/kg doses was significantly decreased in relation to vehicle rats and all doses reduced PE frequency. 5-HT2 compounds at any dose did not affect the number of animals ejaculating, but the frequency was significantly reduced by all doses of DOI and by 1 to 5 mg/kg doses of ketanserin. Taken together, the results suggest that serotonergic receptors play an important role in genital reflexes induced by cocaine in sleep deprived males. (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Conhecimento sobre DST/AIDS por estudantes adolescentes(Universidade de São Paulo, Escola de Enfermagem, 2009-09-01) Brêtas, José Roberto da Silva [UNIFESP]; Ohara, Conceicao Vieira da Silva [UNIFESP]; Jardim, Dulcilene Pereira [UNIFESP]; Muroya, Renata de Lima [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)This study aims to analyze the degree of knowledge adolescents have on STD/AIDS prevention, transmission, signs, and symptoms, and to contribute with the elaboration of educational actions in the University Extension Program called Corporality and Health Promotion. The research counted on 1,087 adolescents (40% females, 60% males) and was carried out in three elementary and high schools located in the municipality of Embu. A structured, multiple choice questionnaire was applied. Data indicated the achievement of the following results: as per the prevention, 92% of girls and 78% of boys referred to the use of condoms, while 42% of girls and 43% of boys affirmed to wash their genitalia after the sexual relation; 75% females and 52% males quoted television as their source of information. As per the knowledge of STD, girls and boys indicated not to have much information on the issue. Regarding STD healing programs, 57% females and 71% males affirmed not to have any knowledge on the issue; 5% of girls and 6% of boys thought AIDS to be curable. In a general perspective, we can conclude that girls were more familiar with the study's issues than boys.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Contato com antígenos paternos pela mucosa vaginal e oral e o aborto de repetição(Federação Brasileira das Sociedades de Ginecologia e Obstetrícia, 2004-03-01) Mattar, Rosiane [UNIFESP]; Soares, Regina Victoria Pereira [UNIFESP]; Camano, Luiz [UNIFESP]; Daher, Silvia [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)PURPOSE: to evaluate whether oral and vaginal sex practice, with or without exposure to semen, decrease the occurrence of recurrent spontaneous abortion. METHOD: this was a case-control study carried out between May 2000 and April 2003. A questionnaire was applied analyzing the clinical, obstetric and sexual history of women, who were divided into two groups: a case group comprised 116 patients with a history of at least two spontaneous abortions, without previous pregnancy longer than 22 weeks, and a control group that included 241 women with history of one or more term pregnancies with live birth and no miscarriage. The analyzed variables included the number of sexual partners, condom use, oral sex practice, and the exposure of female oral mucosa to semen. RESULTS: in the control group 38.8%, and in the patients group 35.7% of the women had only one partner. In both groups about 75% of the women reported that the partners did not use condom. Approximately 55% of the women of both groups referred oral sex practice, and 13.8% of those with recurrent abortion and 20.3% with a history of successful pregnancies had oral mucosa exposed to semen. There was no difference between the patients with recurrent abortion and women with successful pregnancies regarding number of sexual partners, use of condom, practice of oral sex, and exposure of oral mucosa to the partner's semen. CONCLUSION: our results did not confirm the hypothesis that sexual behavior influences the occurrence of spontaneous abortion.

The types of dysfunction most frequently identified were dyspareunia, vaginismus, dysfunction of desire, orgasmic and arousal. The significantly associated factors were Catholic or protestant religions, vaginal delivery with suture, dyspareunia during pregnancy, vaginismus before pregnancy and working hours over 8 hours/daily.Conclusion The prevalence of sexual dysfunction was high and associated factors were religion, working hours, previous history of dysfunction and type of delivery.
To evaluate the prevalence of sexual risky behaviors, abortion, sexual dysfunction, crime and associated factors in a sample of alcohol and non-injected drugs users admitted to a specialized unit for treatment of chemical dependence. Material and Methods: this was a cross-sectional study, using a structured instrument applied in consecutive admissions, containing sociodemographic data, characteristics related to sexual behavior and scales to assess the presence of sexual dysfunction symptoms, level of dependence of psychoactive substances, impulsivity, and screening of sex addiction. Results: a sample of 616 patients, 82.5% men, 51.9% were single, 54.5% white, in 71.4% the family monthly income is 1 to 3 minimum wages, 47.3% have less than 8 years of schooling, in 49.4% crack was the drug of choice. Sexual dysfunction was common in both men (37.2%) and women (34.2%) with similar prevalence rates betwen both sexes. Higher levels of psychoactive dependence made it more common to have sexual dysfunctions. Especially, high level of nicotine dependence was associated with sexual dysfunction in women who use psychoactive substances, increasing by about 2 times the odds of sexual dysfunctions. In women, there were no statistical differences between the prevalence of sexual dysfunction investigated using a standardized scale and a single direct question about difficulties / dysfunctions. Among men, premature ejaculation (53.2%) was the most common sexual dysfunction and 89.8% of those who have sexual complaints never sought medical help. Many sexual behaviors of high vulnerability, such as exchanging sex for drugs, sex with prostitutes, and multiple sexual partners were associated with the level of psychoactive substance dependence, increasing the chances of sexual risky behavior. Alcohol and cocaine were the drugs of choice that were more associated with sexual behaviors of high vulnerability and not crack, as initially expected in the present study. Half of crack users tend not to use condoms, especially men. The three main reasons reported for not using condoms were the fact of having a stable partner, belief in the decrease of sensitivity and being too excited to put on a condom. In both sexes, no condom use was associated with more severe levels of dependence on substances. In this sample, crime history (32%) was associated with several sexual behaviors and severity of psychoactive substances. The prevalence of induced abortion in this 339 sample was 26.8% and was significantly associated with dependence levels of psychoactive substances and sexual risk behavior. The tabacco use is positively associated to sexual orientation. Although 23.9% were screenined as possible sex dependents. Conclusion: Psychoactive substance dependents have various sexual behaviors of vulnerability and high prevalence of sexual dysfunction and crimes related to level of dependence and problems with alcohol and other drugs.
- ItemSomente MetadadadosDiurnal variation in the genital reflexes and hormone levels induced by paradoxical sleep deprivation and cocaine in male rats(Elsevier B.V., 2004-09-30) Andersen, Monica Levy [UNIFESP]; Papale, Ligia Assumpção [UNIFESP]; Tufik, Sergio [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)The purpose was to ascertain whether the genital reflexes induced by paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) in male rats show diurnal variation, and whether the hormonal rhythm of testosterone and progesterone is involved in these behaviors. Genital reflexes (penile erection - PE, and ejaculation - EJ) and hormone levels were assessed during a 24 h period at four testing times (0900, 1600, 2 100 and 0400 h) in PSD rats injected with saline or cocaine. Results indicated that PE in PSD rats given saline or cocaine did not show diurnal variation while EJ responses were significantly reduced at 0400 h in the PSD-cocaine group. the home-cage control group testosterone concentrations were lower at 1600, 2100 and 0400 h than at 0900 h. At 0900 h, testosterone levels were significantly lower in the PSD groups than in the control group. in contrast, progesterone levels were significantly higher in PSD groups in relation to the control group at the four testing times. Thus, we observed strong diurnal variation in testosterone and progesterone in control rats whereas only EJ responses in PSD-cocaine seemed to be influenced by the time of day. These results suggest that progesterone may influence the modulation of male genital reflexes displayed by sleep-deprived rats. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
- ItemSomente MetadadadosDoes male sexual behavior require progesterone?(Elsevier B.V., 2006-06-01) Andersen, Monica Levy [UNIFESP]; Tufik, Sergio [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)In this article, we provide a concise review of the past and current literature on the neglected influence of progesterone on male sexual behavior. Although there has been increased interest in all aspects of male sexual function, and the importance of androgens in the regulation of male copulatory behavior has long been well documented, knowledge of the role of progesterone on male sexual behavior is still patchy. Very little human data exist on this theme, and most of the literature concerns animal research, in particular reptiles and rodents. This review attempts to outline specific progesterone mechanisms involved in male sexual behavior, showing that this hormone plays a more relevant role in the control of male sexual behavior than commonly assumed. Exploring the neuroendocrine mechanisms of progesterone in the sexual behavior of males may provide insights into the regulation of sexuality in this gender. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. - ItemSomente MetadadadosEffects of different substance misuse in genital reflexes of paradoxical sleep deprived male rats(Blackwell Publishing, 2007-06-01) Andersen, Monica Levy [UNIFESP]; Perry, Juliana Cini [UNIFESP]; Papale, Ligia Assumpção [UNIFESP]; Tufik, Sergio [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)As psychostimulants are widely abused, their neurochemical and behavioral effects have been extensively studied for many years. Our previous data demonstrate that paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) enhances drug-induced penile erection and ejaculation. PSD in association to drugs of abuse like cocaine potentiated genital reflexes in male rats. in this sense, the present study investigated if three substances abused by young people - such as Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta(THC)-T-9), alcohol and caffeine - had any significant effect on the genital reflexes in PSD rats. the results indicated that PSD induced erection in 50% of the rats and 20% ejaculated. in addition, there was no significant alteration in the number of animals exhibiting genital reflexes neither on the frequency of these behaviors when challenged with Delta(9)-THC or alcohol or caffeine after 96 h of PSD. These findings show that Delta(THC)-T-9, alcohol and caffeine when administrated isolated did not produce alterations in genital reflexes in the PSD male rats.
- ItemSomente MetadadadosThe effects of dopaminergic agonists on genital reflexes in paradoxical sleep deprived male rats(Elsevier B.V., 2005-02-15) Andersen, Monica Levy [UNIFESP]; Tufik, Sergio [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Dopamine (DA) agonists provide evidence that different receptor subtypes in the central nervous system (CNS) have influence in sexual behavior. Sleep deprivation induces supersensibility of DA receptors and previous work has shown that the DA agonist apomorphine enhances spontaneous genital reflexes (penile erection-PE and ejaculation-EJ) in rats deprived of paradoxical sleep. the present study sought to extend the latter finding by assessing the effects of other DA agonists in paradoxical sleep-deprived (PSD) male rats. the DA drugs (bromocriptine and piribedil) were acutely administered to rats that had been deprived of sleep for 4 days and to normal controls. Sleep deprivation alone induced PE and this effect was potentiated by piribedil, with maximal effects occurring with the 8 mg/kg dose, whereas only one dose of bromocriptine (8 mg/kg) induced more PE in PSD rats than in non-deprived treated controls. EJs were increased in piribedil PSD groups but this response was absent after bromocriptine treatment in the dose range tested. Our data show the genital reflexes that occurred in PSD rats are potentialized by piribedil and not by bromocriptine. These DA agonists showed distinct effects m sexual response suggesting that these effects are probably due to PSD-induced DA receptor supersensitivity even though different mechanisms are involved. - ItemSomente MetadadadosEffects of morphine or naloxone on cocaine-induced genital reflexes in paradoxical sleep-deprived rats(Elsevier B.V., 2004-11-01) Andersen, Monica Levy [UNIFESP]; Frussa-Filho, Roberto [UNIFESP]; Tufik, Sergio [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)The involvement of opioidergic neurotransmission in the modulation of genital reflexes induced by paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) and cocaine in rats was the aim of the present study. Morphine (0, 1, 5 and 10 mg/kg) and naloxone (0, 0.3, 3 and 30 mg/kg) were administered prior to saline or cocaine to rats that had been deprived of sleep and the incidence of penile erections (PE) and ejaculations (EJ) was measured. PSD alone induced PE in 50% and EJ in 20% of the rats, but these behaviors were not influenced by morphine or naloxone. Cocaine potentiated the incidence of genital reflexes in PSD rats to 90% (PE) and 70% (EJ). Morphine and not naloxone significantly reduced the percentage of rats displaying this response at the highest doses. Morphine also significantly reduced PE and EJ frequencies at 10 mg/kg. Furthermore, this inhibitory effect of morphine on genital reflexes was prevented by the prior injection of naloxone. Although a number of factors are involved in such a complex phenomenon as PE and EJ, our data show that activation of the opioidergic systems by the agonist morphine reduces genital reflexes-induced by cocaine in PSD males while the antagonist, naloxone, did not have any significant effect. the findings suggest that the stimulating effects of cocaine in potentiating genital reflexes in PSD rats can be unidirectionally modified by opioidergic systems. - ItemSomente MetadadadosEffects of paradoxical sleep deprivation on genital reflexes in five rat strains(Elsevier B.V., 2006-02-01) Andersen, Monica Levy [UNIFESP]; Antunes, Isabela B. [UNIFESP]; Tufik, Sergio [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)This study examined the effects of cocaine on genital reflexes in paradoxical sleep-deprived (PSD) male rats of five strains since it has been demonstrated that this drug enhances genital reflexes in Wistar PSD rats. At the end of a 4-day period of PSD or at the equivalent time-point to control animals, cocaine or saline was acutely administered to the animals and penile erection (PE) and ejaculation (EJ) were quantified. Results indicated that PSD induced genital reflexes in all strains, and cocaine potentiated these behaviors in Wistar and Long-Evans rats. Wistar PSD rats injected with cocaine performed significantly more PE than all the other PSD + cocaine strains. the number of Wistar and Long-Evans PSD + cocaine ejaculating was significantly higher than the respective PSD + saline and control, whereas a tendency of increase was seen in relation to other groups. Wistar PSD + cocaine rats showed the highest EJ frequency compared to F344, Sprague-Dawley and Wistar-Kyoto strains, and the Long-Evans displayed more EJ than Sprague-Dawley and Wistar-Kyoto. Analysis of testosterone concentrations revealed that after sleep deprivation, Wistar, Long-Evans, and F344 rats showed significantly lower testosterone concentrations than control rats. in F344, Sprague-Dawley and Wistar-Kyoto controls rats, testosterone was significantly lower than in the control Wistar and Long-Evans. Progesterone concentrations were significantly hither in Wistar and Long-Evans PSD rats than in respective control groups. in the other strains, this hormone was significantly lower compared to the Wistar and Long-Evans PSD. This study demonstrates that genital reflexes are differently influenced by PSD associated to cocaine in five rat strains. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Being influenced by genetic, social and cultural rights factors, adolescent sexual behavior is often permeated by conflict situations. This study aimed to disclose sexual behaviors of Nursing University female students from Federal University of Piauí, as well as their mechanisms of influence and understanding the aspect that surrounds sexual initiation, considering the obstacles caused by the traditional training and modernizing aspirations. We adopted an ethnography method, by applying profound interviews with twelve students in the months of October and November, 2009. Interviews stood out intersection between sexual behavior and culture, allowing you to see the power exercised by the systems of social representation. It is important to emphasize the need for more importance and attention to the subject for being emergent in several scenes of human existence.
