- ItemSomente MetadadadosAssessment of Quality of Life in Patients Who Underwent Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Procedures(Springer, 2013-06-01) Aquino, Marcello Simao de [UNIFESP]; Haddad, Alessandra [UNIFESP]; Ferreira, Lydia Masako [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)There are increasingly more patients seeking minimally invasive procedures, which have become more effective and safer in reducing the signs of facial aging. This study included 40 female adult patients who voluntarily underwent selected minimally invasive procedures (filling with hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin injection) for facial rejuvenation. All patients were followed for a period of 6 months. They were evaluated with the use of questionnaires, a quality-of-life questionnaire (DLQI), the self-esteem scale of Rosenberg (EPM/Rosenberg), and a pain scale. the minimally invasive procedures resulted in improvement in quality of life and self-esteem, which were stronger the first 3 months after the procedures but remained at a higher level than that before treatment, even after 6 months. Hyaluronic acid with lidocaine in the formula is more comfortable for the patient as it makes the injection less painful.Level of Evidence III This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. for a full description of these Evidence-Based Medicine ratings, please refer to the Table of Contents or the online Instructions to Authors www.springer.com/00266.
- ItemSomente MetadadadosFactors associated with illicit drugs' lifetime and frequent/heavy use among students results from a population survey(Elsevier Ireland Ltd, 2016) Bitancourt, Tania [UNIFESP]; Ribeiro Grilli Tissot, Maria Cristina; Fidalgo, Thiago Marques [UNIFESP]; Fernandes Galduroz, Jose Carlos [UNIFESP]; da Silveira Filho, Dartiu Xavier [UNIFESP]Substance use among teenage students and factors associated were investigated through a survey using a questionnaire adapted from the WHO's Program on Research and Reporting on the Epidemiology of Drug Dependence, additional questions on family factors and personal risks, and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory, adapted to Brazil. The target population consisted of 3891 10-22-year-old students from the city of Embu das Artes, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The prevalence of lifetime substance use was 26.7%. Most commonly used substances were energy drinks combined with alcohol (19%), solvents (11.2%) and marijuana (4.8%). Almost 60% of the students had already tried alcohol and 18.2% had tried tobacco. Factors associated to lifetime substance use were: lower self-esteem, going to nightclubs at least twice a week, use of alcohol, trying tobacco, bad relationship with the mother, permissive mothers, practicing sports as an obligation, working, and higher socioeconomic level. Concerning frequent/heavy substance use, chances were found to be higher among students who had use tobacco and alcohol, going to nightclubs at least twice a week, and those with lower self-esteem. Preventive actions concerning drug use should focus on avoiding the first experimentation, approaching family relationships, and improving students' self-esteem. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Rhinophyma causes severe nasal deformity, promoting severe stigmatization, social reclusion, and low self-esteem. These symptoms are aggravated by poor disclosure about the disease and effective treatment options. The fractionated carbon dioxide laser has been helpful in the rhinophyma therapy since it is a noninvasive and outpatient use procedure, with simple handling and lower risk of complications. OBJECTIVES. This study was carried out aiming at the development and validation of flowchart for diagnosis and treatment with fractionated CO2 laser, and the assessment of the impact of treatment with fractionated CO2 laser on self-esteem and satisfaction of rhinophyma patients. METHOD. A flowchart of medical care for rhinophyma patients and systematization of fractionated CO2 laser parameters was developed and validated. To analyze its clinical application, 12 rhinophyma patients were submitted to CO2 laser treatment according to the developed flowchart, and the patient satisfaction self-esteem assessments were determined from questionnaires applied. RESULTS. Nine experts validated the flowchart in a single round of appreciation. The item "Objective and Relevance" obtained an IVC of 0.978; The item "Structure and Presentation" presented IVC of 1.0. After the end of the treatment, there was a decrease in score got from Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale. All patients showed to be pleased with the cosmetic results and they would recommend similar treatment to their acquaintances. CONCLUSIONS. The flowchart developed is easily understandable, favoring the propagation of the indicated treatment in several services. The fractional ablative CO2 laser confers satisfaction and substantial improvement on the self-esteem of patients with rhinophyma.

[UNIFESP]; Ferreira, Lydia M. [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)To evaluate the quality of life (QoL) and self-esteem of paraplegic persons. The sample consisted of 60 outpatients with traumatic paraplegia living in SA o pound Paulo, Brazil, from whom clinical and demographic data were obtained. QoL was assessed by the 36-item Short-Form (SF-36) health survey questionnaire, and self-esteem was measured by Rosenberg's Self-Esteem (RSE) scale. Statistical analysis was performed using Student's t-test, analysis of variance and Fisher's least significant difference (LSD) test at a significance level of 5%.Participants were predominately men (86.7%) with a mean age of 32.9 (standard deviation [SD] = 9.47) years, low education level and low income. the SF-36 dimensions that received the lowest scores were physical functioning, role physical and role emotional. Cronbach's alpha for the SF-36 questionnaire was 0.80. A significant statistical difference was found between the presence of pressure ulcers and low scores on mental health (P = 0.001), as determined by Student's t-test. the mean self-esteem score was 8.35 and there was a significant statistical difference between low self-esteem scores and occupation (P = 0.008).Participants reported low QoL and self-esteem. the results provide background information that may be useful in the development of strategies to reduce the impact of spinal cord injury (SCI) on the life and health of persons with SCI, improving their QoL.
