The aim of this study was to investigate the psychological abilities and the professional trajectory of professional soccer players. This is a research, of quantitative-qualitative nature, of intentional sampling, composed of three studies. The research project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of UNIFESP (394,420 / 2013). The first study investigated the quality of life, stress levels, anxiety and sports coping skills of 26 male athletes of the first division of the Brazilian Championship. Instruments: Profile Questionnaire, Economic Classification Criterion, Quality of Life Assessment (WHOQOL-BREF), Beck Anxiety Inventory, Lipp's Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults and Athletic Combat Skills Inventory - 28. The results showed that the athletes presented good quality of life, low levels of anxiety and stress and good repertoire of coping. The second study investigated the mood states and the pre-competitive anxiety. Participated 21 professional soccer players before three games for the Brazilian Championship (1st division) and Brazil Cup. Instruments: Brunel Humor Scale and the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory - 2R. It was possible to observe a similarity in the variation of the results throughout the three games. The scores were higher in the positive mood state (vigor) when compared to the negative states (tension, depression, anger, fatigue, mental confusion). The mean of Tension in game 1 was statistically higher than the average in game 3 and the mean of Game 1 mental confusion was statistically lower than the means of games 2 and 3 (p <0.05). Athletes also had higher self-confidence values and lower anxiety values and mean somatic anxiety in game 1 was higher than the means of games 2 and 3 (p <0.05). The third study investigated the life history and the sporting trajectory of Brazilian soccer players. Six players who have played the Brazilian team in the professional category were interviewed. It is noted that football presents itself as a central theme in their lives and that the family plays an important role in the context of sport.
