The sports psychologist can assist in the development of psychological skills to cope with the stressors of competitive sports, as well as to promote the well-being and motivation of swimmers. Thus, the present study aimed to develop a program of psychological skills training with swimming athletes in order to favor the improvement of coping strategies, sports performance and subjective well-being of athletes. This is a quantitative-qualitative study of intentional sampling, composed of two parts. The first one consisted of the application of an in-depth interview with the intention of knowing the sports history, coping strategies for sports management and perception of subjective well-being of each athlete. In the second part, the athletes participated in an intervention program for the development of psychological abilities. Four male and female swimming athletes from the Juvenil, Junior and Senior categories participated in the study. Participants included the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory (CSAI-2R), Athletic Coping Skills Inventory - 28 (ACSI-28BR), Life Satisfaction Scale (ESV) and Test of Performance Strategies - 2 (TOPS2). There were 12 intervention sessions and two follow-ups (one month and two months). From the interviews, four categories were created: (1) to be an athlete; (2) demands on the psychology of sport; (3) motivation for sports; and (4) pain in the life of an athlete. The results showed reduced levels of anxiety (cognitive and somatic), improved self-confidence and coping skills. Life satisfaction levels also increased after interventions. It was verified the reduction of the times in competition of all the participants. The Psychological Skills Training Program indicated an improvement in the psychological resources and favored the well-being of the participants, which reinforces the importance of the presence of the professional of the psychology of the sport in the swimming technical team.

The aim of this study was to investigate the psychological abilities and the professional trajectory of professional soccer players. This is a research, of quantitative-qualitative nature, of intentional sampling, composed of three studies. The research project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of UNIFESP (394,420 / 2013). The first study investigated the quality of life, stress levels, anxiety and sports coping skills of 26 male athletes of the first division of the Brazilian Championship. Instruments: Profile Questionnaire, Economic Classification Criterion, Quality of Life Assessment (WHOQOL-BREF), Beck Anxiety Inventory, Lipp's Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults and Athletic Combat Skills Inventory - 28. The results showed that the athletes presented good quality of life, low levels of anxiety and stress and good repertoire of coping. The second study investigated the mood states and the pre-competitive anxiety. Participated 21 professional soccer players before three games for the Brazilian Championship (1st division) and Brazil Cup. Instruments: Brunel Humor Scale and the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory - 2R. It was possible to observe a similarity in the variation of the results throughout the three games. The scores were higher in the positive mood state (vigor) when compared to the negative states (tension, depression, anger, fatigue, mental confusion). The mean of Tension in game 1 was statistically higher than the average in game 3 and the mean of Game 1 mental confusion was statistically lower than the means of games 2 and 3 (p <0.05). Athletes also had higher self-confidence values and lower anxiety values and mean somatic anxiety in game 1 was higher than the means of games 2 and 3 (p <0.05). The third study investigated the life history and the sporting trajectory of Brazilian soccer players. Six players who have played the Brazilian team in the professional category were interviewed. It is noted that football presents itself as a central theme in their lives and that the family plays an important role in the context of sport.
