The period of study starts in the late 19th Century - when there was a reorganization in social, economic, political and cultural aspects of the Brazilian society, driven by the Proclamation of the Republic, that made possible the expansion of urban strata and middle classes, - and the early 20th Century, when there was the decrease in construction activity, caused by the effects of World War I. Thus, we investigated the building activity in the locality, understood as one in which the promotion of housing, both for own use as well as for rent, contributed to the occupation of the place, the densification of the streets and the territorial expansion of the city in its southern vector. Thus, we investigated how, historically, is it possible to understand the constitution and the procedural transformation of the neighborhood?s physiognomy. Vila Mariana becomes a privileged space, too, for understanding the action of members of these middle classes in São Paulo, whose faces are still unknown in historiography of the city.
