The recyclable material collectors compose the set of unskilled workers for tasks that market and their job of picking is considered informal. Unemployment and the need to obtain livelihoods make men, women, elderly and even kids to seek this type of work. The aim of this paper is to present the reasons why parents insert their children at an early age in the work of scavengers of recyclable material. Therefore, a qualitative study was conducted through interviews with 15 fathers and 24 mothers pickers. As a result, we identified that the motivation of the parents is to supply financial needs, to protect and teach their children through work. Finally, parents consider the inclusion of their children in picking a form of care.
