METHODS: One hundred patients were studied, with ages ranging between 30 and 90 years old (median = 55 years old). There were 44 males and 56 females. We divided them in two groups. One group had fifty patients with skin cancers, equal or larger than 10mm in the greater axis, and the pathological status was confirmed by previous biopsy. The control group had 50 patients without skin cancer. Rosenberg/UNIFESP-EPM's Self-esteem Scale was used to evaluate self-esteem. Data were analyzed by Mann - Whitney's test and Kruskal Wallis test. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the two groups in relation to age (p = 0.331), sex and education. The mean tumor size was 20.9 ± 2 mm. Skin cancer patients presented significantly lower self-esteem, with average score of 6.84 and 3.90 for the control group (p = 0.002). CONCLUSION: Patients with skin cancer of the head and neck presented lower self-esteem than individuals without cancer.

METHODS: Thirty euthyroid patients were evaluated in the inactive phase of disease with age ranging from 26 to 65 years, average of 43 ± 11,0 years, called study group and 39 individuals without Graves' ophthalmopathy with age ranging from 18 to 67 years, average of 41 ± 13,4 years, selected from the general population called control group. To evaluate the self-esteem the Rosenberg UNIFESP/EPM self-esteem scale, applied by means of an interview, was utilized. The self-esteem scores in the two studied groups were compared by means of the non-parametric Mann-Whitey test. The same test was applied to compare the obtained scores in the Graves' ophthalmopathy group considering disease severity. RESULTS: No alteration with statistical significance in Graves' ophthalmopathy patients' self-esteem was observed (P=0.057). The study group presented, on average, lower self-esteem values when compared with the control group. There was no difference of self-esteem mild and moderate-severe patients (P=0.2710). CONCLUSION: Graves' ophthalmopathy in the inactive phase did not affect the patients' self-esteem in the group studied.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)A autopercepção da voz do adolescente(Sociedade Brasileira de Fonoaudiologia, 2009-01-01) Almeida, Anna Alice Figueirêdo de [UNIFESP]; Behlau, Mara [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Universidade Federal da Paraíba; Centro de Estudos da VozPURPOSE: To verify the self-perception of adolescents concerning their own voice. METHODS: A questionnaire regarding voice and communication was applied to 80 volunteer adolescents, 58 female (72.5%) and 22 male (27.5%), with ages ranging from 10 to 19 years, participants of the Program of Adolescent Healthcare of the State of São Paulo. Subjects answered the questionnaire themselves, and data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The main age range was from 16 to 17 years (23 - 28.8%). Half of the subjects (41 - 51.3%) reported positive vocal characteristics, classifying it as normal (42 - 52.5%); in addition, 33 (41.3%) did not detect vocal modifications during adolescence, demonstrating satisfaction with their production (65 - 81.3%), referring that their voices matched their personality (27 - 33.8%) and, therefore, they did not wish to modify it (61 - 76,3%). The three most frequently reported negative vocal habits were: yelling (30 - 37.5%), drinking cold beverages (20 - 32.5%), and smoking (22 - 27.5%). In turn, the subjects reported as beneficial vocal habits: drinking water (31 - 38.8%), singing (30 - 37.5%) and not yelling (20 - 25%). Young men reported vocal problems related to pitch (54.5%, p<0.001), and young women, to loudness (32.1%, p<0.001). These problems were pointed out as impairing factors to their communication. CONCLUSION: The perception of adolescents about their voice and communication interferes in their relationship with others, in their way of thinking and acting, and the way they interact with reality and the society.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Avaliação de sintomas depressivos em pessoas com úlcera venosa(Sociedade Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica, 2012-03-01) Salomé, Geraldo Magela [UNIFESP]; Blanes, Leila [UNIFESP]; Ferreira, Lydia Masako [UNIFESP]; Universidade do Vale de Sapucaí; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)BACKGROUND: Venous ulcers play an important role in patients' lives, as the incidence of deformities caused by this type of wound might produce adverse consequences, including psychosocial disorders. The objective of this study is to evaluate the occurrence of depressive symptoms presented by patients with venous ulcers. METHODS: An exploratory, descriptive, analytical, and cross-sectional study was conducted at the Outpatient Wound Clinic of the Hospital Set within the State of São Paulo. The data were collected by interviews between December 2008 and April 2009 after approval of the research project by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of São Paulo (CEP-1611/08). The Beck Depression Inventory was the instrument of the study. RESULTS: Sixty patients participated in the survey. The majority (91.66%) showed some level of depression. There was a higher frequency of symptoms ranging from mild to moderate (n = 39; 65%). All levels of depression showed statistical differences. The five symptoms most commonly found were sadness, distorted body image, self-depreciation, decreased libido, and social withdrawal. Symptoms less represented were suicidal ideation and loss of appetite, each mentioned by only one patient. Forty-three patients were over 61 years old. Of these, 38 (88.4%) had depressive symptoms ranging from mild to severe. CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained and evaluated by the Beck Depression Inventory allow the conclusion that patients with venous ulcers present different levels of depressive symptoms.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Estados emocionais de casais submetidos à fertilização in vitro(Programa de Pós-Graduação em Psicologia, Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas, 2009-12-01) Montagnini, Helena Maria Loureiro [UNIFESP]; Blay, Sergio Luis [UNIFESP]; Novo, Neil Ferreira [UNIFESP]; Freitas, Vilmon de [UNIFESP]; Cedenho, Agnaldo Pereira [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Faculdade de Medicina de Santo Amaro Disciplina de Saúde PúblicaInfertility intrudes into the plans in one's personal life and the life of a couple, and causes mental suffering. In vitro fertilization is a new technique in reproductive technology and offers fresh hope of having children, but at the same time, it is considered to be a stressful experience. The aim of this study is to compare the emotional state of men and women undergoing in vitro fertilization and identify a possible relationship between women's emotional state and a successful outcome. Twenty couples in their first cycle of in vitro fertilization were included in this study. Men and women were submitted individually to psychological interviews and tests between 5 and 10 days after the transfer of pre-embryos. Women presented higher levels of anxiety and depression than men. Their self-esteem proved to be lower. Those women (25%) that presented psycho-emotional symptoms, did not get pregnant, however this relationship was not significant. Based on these findings, we conclude that women presented greater anxiety and symptoms of depression than the men and had lower self-esteem. The group of women with psycho-emotional symptoms displayed a tendency not to get pregnant.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Qualidade de vida em pacientes com úlcera venosa em terapia compressiva por bota de Unna(Sociedade Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica, 2012-09-01) Salomé, Geraldo Magela [UNIFESP]; Ferreira, Lydia Masako [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)BACKGROUND: Venous ulcers are a major public health problem worldwide and are responsible for considerable economic impact because of their high incidence. In addition to restricting daily living and leisure activities, they may result in changes in quality of life and self-esteem, and even lead to depression. The aim of this study is to evaluate the quality of life in patients with venous ulcers who are being treated with Unna's boot compression therapy. METHODS: Fifty patients with venous ulcers treated at the Conjunto Hospitalar de Sorocaba were enrolled. Data were collected using the Short Form-36 (SF-36) health survey upon inclusion in the study and after 4, 8, and 12 months of compression therapy. RESULTS: Initial mean SF-36 scores were low (15.10), indicating decreased quality of life. After 12 months of Unna's boot compression therapy, the mean SF-36 score was 95.38, indicating improved quality of life (P = 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with venous ulcers at the beginning of data collection had lower quality of life but improved after 8 months of treatment with Unna's boot compression therapy.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Repercussões na auto-estima provocadas pela tricotomia em craniotomia(Universidade de São Paulo, Escola de Enfermagem, 2009-09-01) Diccini, Solange [UNIFESP]; Yoshinaga, Suellen Naomi [UNIFESP]; Marcolan, Joao Fernando [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)This quantitative-based, prospective-oriented study aims to evaluate the repercussion of hair removal in post-craniotomy's patient self-esteem. Data show that the majority of patients mentioned not having an altered self-esteem due to hair removal; self-esteem was kept the same among patients that were instructed about the hair removal process. The major part of patients made use of accessories as a strategy to hide shaved areas and believed that hair removal damaged neither their quality of life nor their social relationships. We conclude that the feelings directly related to the decrease of self-esteem are loss of physical attraction, insecurity and shame. The employment of accessories is made necessary towards improving self-esteem, and healthcare professionals must work with the psychosocial aspects of pre and post-surgery patients.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Resultados clínicos e satisfação dos pacientes após blefaroplastia inferior(Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgiões, 2011-10-01) Viana, Giovanni André Pires [UNIFESP]; Osaki, Midori Hentona [UNIFESP]; Nishi, Mauro [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of fifty patients undergoing transcutaneous lower eyelid blepharoplasty. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, randomised, controlled trial between April 2005 and May 2007. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: Group 1 consisted of 25 surgical patients undergoing traditional lower blepharoplasty and routine lateral canthopexy; Group 2 consisted of 25 patients undergoing lower blepharoplasty with fat bags transposition and routine lateral canthopexy. We used the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale UNIFESP / EPM to assess patients' self-esteem. We also requested the participation of three independent surgeons, who examined the pre and postoperative photographs and quantified the results with the aid of a topographic scale. RESULTS: The mean age was 48.8 years, predominantly females (96%). The analysis of photographs showed a 96% significant improvement. Self-esteem scores improved from a preoperative average of 5.1 (SD = 4.1) to a mean of 3.6 (SD = 3.5) six months after the operation (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Both procedures are safe and effective with low complication rates, causing improvement of self-esteem assessed six months after the operation.
