- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Autologous serum for ocular surface diseases(Conselho Brasileiro de Oftalmologia, 2008-12-01) Quinto, Guilherme Goulart; Campos, Mauro Silveira de Queiroz [UNIFESP]; Behrens, Ashley; The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Fellow in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Wilmer Ophthalmological InstituteAutologous serum has been used to treat dry eye syndrome for many years. It contains several growth factors, vitamins, fibronectin and other components that have been considered important for corneal and conjunctival integrity. Serum eye drops are usually prepared as an unpreserved blood solution. The serum is by nature well tolerated and its biochemical properties are somewhat similar to natural tears. Autologous serum eye drops have been reported to be effective for the treatment of severe dry eye-related ocular surface disorders (Sjögren's syndrome), and also other entities such as superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis, graft-versus-host disease, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, recurrent or persistent corneal erosions, neurotrophic keratopathy, Mooren's ulcer, aniridic keratopathy, filtering blebs after trabeculectomy, and post-keratorefractive surgery. The purpose of this study is to review the recently published literature on ocular surface diseases treated with human autologous serum eye drops.

- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Síndrome lacrimo-auriculo-dento-digital (LADD): relato de caso e revisão da literatura(Conselho Brasileiro de Oftalmologia, 2009-10-01) Caluff, Paula Renata; Silva, Andre Luiz De Freitas; Mascaro, Vera Lucia Degaspare Monte [UNIFESP]; Neustein, Isaac [UNIFESP]; Universidade Federal do Pará; Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual de São Paulo; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Levy-Hollister or lacrimo-auriculo-dento-digital (LADD) syndrome is a rare entity with autossomic dominant inheritance occuring as an isolated form or affecting many family generations. Diagnosis is based on the identification of the lacrimal drainage system abnormalities with reduction or absence of tear production and bone, teeth, salivar glands and outer ear abnormalities. A 13 year-old male patient has been followed at the Hospital Servidor Público Estadual in São Paulo due to dry eye since his first year of life. Due to the occurrence of early ocular manifestations in patients with Levy-Hollister or lacrimo-auriculo-dento-digital syndrome, ophthalmologists must be aware to recognize and control this syndrome.
- ItemAcesso aberto (Open Access)Ten-year follow-up of a case series of primary epithelial neoplasms of the lacrimal gland: clinical features, surgical treatment and histopathological findings(Conselho Brasileiro de Oftalmologia, 2010-02-01) Santos, Rodrigo Ribeiro; Damasceno, Renato Wendell Ferreira [UNIFESP]; De Pontes, Fernanda Silva Lopes; Cursino, Sylvia Regina T.; Nishiwaki-dantas, Maria Cristina; Vital Filho, José; Dantas, Paulo Elias Correa; Santa Casa de Misericórdia São Paulo Department of Ophthalmology Corneal and External Disease Service; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Santa Casa de Misericórdia São Paulo Department of Pathology Ophthalmic Pathology Service; Santa Casa de Misericórdia São Paulo Department of Ophthalmology Oculoplastics Service; Santa Casa de Misericórdia São Paulo Department of OphthalmologyPURPOSE: To describe and analyze the features of a cases series of patients with primary epithelial neoplasms of the lacrimal gland, its surgical treatment, and histopathological findings. METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of files from patients with primary epithelial neoplasms of the lacrimal gland in the period from 1997 to 2007. All patients with primary epithelial tumors of the lacrimal gland were included in this study. Data on gender, age, clinical features, surgical treatment, histopathological findings and follow-up were collected. The slides with histological sections of the tumors were reviewed by the same pathologist. RESULTS: During the study period, there were 12 patients, 5 (41.7%) with benign tumors, all pleomorphic adenomas (benign mixed tumor) and 7 (58.3%) with malignant neoplasms, thus distributed: four cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma, two of mucoepidermoid carcinoma and one carcinoma expleomorphic adenoma. Globally, patients mean age was 54.1 years-old (ranging from 14 to 70 years-old), with mean age of 52.4 years-old (ranging from 14 to 65 years-old) for benign neoplasms, and 55.3years-old for malignant neoplasms (ranging from 26 to 70 years-old). Clinical follow-up information, ranging from 2 to 10 years-old, was available for all patients. Three patients developed distant metastasis and died of disease. CONCLUSIONS: The most frequent primary epithelial neoplasms of the lacrimal gland were pleomorphic adenoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma during the study period. Malignant tumors were more frequent than benign tumors. The histopathological diagnosis and the disease initial stage can play a significant role in patient's survival.
