In this dissertation, the main objective is to emphasize that knowledge about these phenomena can be an additional source of motivation in the classroom. To this, an approach is made to the main topics that collaborate in understanding mechanical oscillations, highlighting the trigonometric functions and the second order ordinary differential equations (ODEs). In addition, many real situations, which generate curiosity are directly related to phenomena of this nature, such as the case of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. We bring this intriguing historical fact as a motivating agent, to exemplify the important correlation that may exist between understanding aspects of trigonometric functions, the modeling mechanical oscillations, and curious real-life situations.
