dc.description.abstract This epidemiological research comes from the construction of a theoretical framework on abortion, measured quantitatively in the population of women from their fertile period. Its objectives are to point out the morbidity in 1994 and the mortality due to abortions in the period of 1977 to 1994 in the city of Sao Paulo. In 1994 the mortality due to abortions was 3.8 per 100,000 live births. The deaths caused by abortion represented 9.8% of the maternal mortality; the historical series shows the decrease of 42.9% in the abortion mortality from 1977 to 1994. The deceased women were young, catholic, some of them were going to school and they lived in the outlying poorer areas. The common ground of all these women was the loneliness they went through. en
