dc.description.abstract The presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in water buffaloes is reported for the first time in South America. the prevalence of STEC ranged from 0 to 64% depending on the farm. STEC isolates exhibiting the genetic profiles stx(1)stx(2)ehxA iha saa and stx(2)ehxA iha saa predominated. of the 20 distinct serotypes identified, more than 50% corresponded to serotypes associated with human diseases. en
