Resumo With the advent of total parenteral nutrition for newborns, the importance of an adequate nitrogen source is emphasized. in a double-blind study, we compared two amino acid solutions for parenteral use, based on the amino acid profile of the potato-egg protein complex (ALPHA) and the amino acid profile of human milk (BETA) for parenteral nutrition of severely ill newborns, by the analysis of plasma amino acid molar ratios. A higher level of essential amino acids was demonstrated in solution BETA, which was reflected in the plasma of the infants of this group. A rearrangement in the plasma of both groups was also observed with respect to the creation of an ideal amino acid profile. Finally, both groups showed the same hepatic and muscular ability to metabolize aromatic and branched-chain amino acids.
